Sexuality Awareness for
Project Based Learning!
Our goal was to make the LGBT community feel accepted and to bring more awareness to our peers and community about the inequality LGBT are shown.
Project Based Leaning has been quite challenging for me. While dealing with some health issues the time limit to finish this project and having weekly deadlines was difficult. Although I have also really enjoyed doing Project Based Learning. I would be interested in doing it again if the project could be completed over a longer period of time, and preferably not in Term 4 because its really chaotic around this time of year.
We focused mainly on trying to make the LGBT community feel more accepted and welcome in our society. We wanted to bring more awareness to this issue by fighting for equality within our peers and community.
I think our cupcake sales weren't as successful as I would've thought because we didn't advertise them enough. But I think our Facebook Page was a lot more successful because we used the social media platform. And also because our page was flooded with support from people from all over New Zealand!
I think we are still trying to achieve our goal. We've managed to get people talking more about it throughout our school hallways but it's yet to expand into the wider community. I believe we could've achieved a lot more if we had a longer period of time to complete the project. But I will be continuing this project even after Project Based Learning is finished because I feel very passionate about bringing more awareness to this.
Something I would do differently next time would be doing less things so we can focus on just one or two. Even though it's great to want to do lots of things for these causes, I've noticed how doing too much can really stress you out and overwork you. If you just stick to one or two things it's easier to put your mind to it and focus purely on that!
The planning and organizing of this project was difficult for me because I feel like I was the one to put all of the effort into it. We also didn't know how much of an issue this really and weren't too sure how we could contribute to this cause. But the more we looked at things online and spoke to people about it we realised that there has never been enough awareness for this issue.
Throughout this project our group has learnt many things about the diversity in humans. We've learnt that there are so many different opinions in this world and everyone's opinions aren't always positive. We've learnt to understand more about what LGBT people around going through and ways that we can help them. We've learnt about individuals and their coming out stories and how they've had to cope with bullying and harassment. We learnt that LGBT is becoming more accepted but we also learnt that there's not enough acceptance, there is not enough love, support or awareness.
I think that our Equality for LGBT project has helped and will continue to help improve and enrich the lives of the many LGBT community members! I think that because....
1. Rainbow Youth will be receiving $120 that we fundraised for them to continue aiding in our LGBT Youth! And it would be great to do something like that again.
2. Anyone apart of the LGBT community could come across our Facebook page at anytime and realise just how much support and love that they really have!
3. Someone who is too afraid to come out can watch the "Equality for LGBT:" video and see how many people truly do support LGBT and know that it's okay for them to come out.
While doing this project I've learnt that I have a true passion for wanting to help others. Helping others has really opened to eyes about how much I can do for other people and how much of a positive affect it has on that person.
Here is a log to show day by day progress of this project:
On Friday the 25th we went to Cafe Carmen to ask if they would let us to sell our cupcakes on the following Wednesday. They said they would get back to us. We also asked Tracey at the Tuckshop if we could sell them there and she said that we could.

Finished the rest of the google doc for the action plan and putting more detail in it. An Enabler was that our group is here today and we were able to continue to work on it with no barriers. Cafe Carmen still hasn't got back to us so I think we are just going to have to sell them at the tuckshop

Today I continued with our planning for our Equality Video and made our Cupcake Fundraiser posters. Our enablers were asking Mr P and Mrs Beer if they will be apart of our video. And also another enabler we asked Mr Aitken if we could use any school cameras to film. We were both here and had no barriers.
1/12/16
Today we put up 10 of our fundraising posters all around school. Mrs Aitken was an enabler because she printed the posters off for us and she gave us her tape and printed them off for us. The only barrier we had was me breaking the tape but then we fixed it.

Today I made my half of the cupcakes and used rainbow coloured cupcake patty's to go with the LGBT Awareness. An enabler was my nan because she let me use her kitchen and also helped me to make them because I can't really cook. I also got some of my friends together and did some filming.
7/12/16
Today me, Caite and Jess iced the cupcakes during Period 2 so we could sell them at Interval. Mrs Pandaram was an enabler because she let us use our maths lesson to ice the cupcakes. Mrs Taylor was also an enabler because she let us use the home economics classroom. I took 15 of the cupcakes to the Staff room and then sold the rest in the tuck shop while Jess and Caite finished cleaning the home economics room. I managed to sell out of the cupcakes within the first 15 minutes of interval. We got $42.10. Today we also tried to get as much filming done as possible but we only managed to get 75% of the footage we need for tomorrows presentation.
It looks like you have put a lot of effort into making this project, you seem to have explained in detailed and it looks like you made some sort of a change in our community.
